Indigenous Peoples and Extractive Industries

The expansion of extractive industries into the territories of Indigenous Peoples in the Americas is a continuing source of conflict and a policy challenge for governments, companies and Indigenous Peoples themselves. The primary rights issues of Indigenous Peoples relate to consultation, territory and land rights, environmental protection and monitoring, and the ability of the extractive industries to contribute to agriculture and other sustainable economic activities. Governance and corporate social responsibility (CSR) frameworks are crucial to the prevention and resolution of socio-environmental conflicts. Between 2006-2008, FOCAL ran a project on Indigenous Peoples and Governance in the Americas, which included how they dealt with extractive industries in their territories. The project published papers and conducted workshops in Canada and the region to address this issue.
